Texas — In response to George Floyd's murder in Minneapolis and the events that have followed, Stuart Williams, chair of the Texas Young Democrats Black Caucus, released the following statement:
"Today, the officer who put his knee on George Floyd’s neck has finally been taken into custody. This step is the bare minimum and our hope is for justice to be served. Many times in this country, justice has been neither fair nor speedy for Black men, women, and children. Three officers still remain free and until all four of these men are arrested, charged, and convicted of murder, no Black person will breathe free in this country.
"Sixty-six years ago Fannie Lou Hamer asked a segregated and hostile America: 'Is this America, the land of the free and the home of the brave, where… our lives be threatened daily, because we want to live as decent human beings, in America?' And yet still we struggle almost 60 years later to live as decent human beings in this country.
"George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and Tony McDade should be alive today. We mourn them and grieve with their families and we demand justice be served. "
