Texas Young Democrats comment on voter suppression at Prairie View A&M, Arrest

Updated: Feb 21, 2019

Austin, Texas — After reports of voter suppression and discrepancies in voter registration in Waller County in two precincts that hold the jurisdiction of Prairie View A&M University, TYD Endorsed Congressional Candidate Mike Siegel requested that immediate action to protect the voting rights of students take place by submitting a letter to the Waller County Elections Office The letter, addressed to Waller County Judge Trey Duhon, was turned in personally by Siegel Regional Field Director Jacob Aronowitz.

When Aronowitz took a photo to prove the receipt of the letter by the office,  he was subsequently detained and arrested without cause and had his property searched without warrant. The Texas Young Democrats condemn this deliberate effort to suppress voter rights and hinder the process of seeking justice.

“We see this corruption of justice for exactly what it is: an intentional misinformation campaign in an effort to silence thousands of young black voters at PVAMU at the ballot box, whose everyday lives are affected by the decisions of elected leaders,” states TYD President Celia Morgan. “We stand in support of our peers at PVAM- and across Texas- in calling  for a fair solution that does not place an undue burden on student voters to cast their constitutionally promised vote in every election. "

Waller County is 70.5% white, according to census date, while 82% of Prairie View A&M’s student population is black, according to date from Spring 2018. Waller County has stated that thousands of students are ineligible to vote due to “improper registration.”

Congressional candidate Mike Siegel along with a coalition of Democratic leaders and student activists will be holding a press conference today, October 11, 2018 at 4 p.m. at the Prairie View A&M Memorial Student Center to address Student Voter Rights Infringement and Aronowitz’s arrest.
