Privacy Paper

Privacy is a fundamental human right. As one of the largest partisan organizations in the nation, all Texas Young Democrats chapters have an obligation to ensure that right is protected.

As an organization trying to engage and inform you, we collect a lot of information from TYD members and the state at large. But individual chapters collect a lot of information about their communities as well.

Email addresses. Phone numbers. ZIP codes and addresses. Social media handles. To name a few.

TYD is committed to ensuring your private data is protected at a city, county, and state level. We expect the same from our chapters. The future is not private; the present already is.

How TYD uses personal data

The TYD Communications Team is proud of the outreach it does across the state. Because of the vastness of the state, most of the outreach TYD does on a state level is digital. This includes, but isn’t limited to, emails, social media posts, text messages, and on the website. All of the information that is provided to TYD is only available to those who manage this outreach. No one else has access to this data — including chapter leaders. Chapters are responsible for collecting their own data. TYD will never disclose any data to any non-TYD entity.

Emails

TYD may ask for your email addresses to provide you with the most up-to-date information about the organization. All emails from TYD are sent from email addresses that look like this: blank@texasyds.com

Email addresses are stored in a database, only accessible to a select few.

All campaign emails — that is, email that are sent to all subscribes — always include an “opt out” option at the footer of the email. You can also email communications@texasyds.com to opt out.

TYD will never add an email to the mailing list without explicit verbal, digital, or written consent by the email holder.

Phone numbers

TYD may ask for your phone number to provide you with texts every so often about reminders or important events — e.g. if there’s an election happening in your area.

Phone numbers are stored in a database, only accessible to a select few.

You can email communications@texasyds.com to opt out.

TYD will never send you a text message that wasn’t also sent to others who have provided their phone number. In other words, unless you have provided your number for contact purposes, we will never call or text you personally for non-TYD business. TYD will never add a phone number to the text list without explicit verbal, digital, or written consent.

Addresses and ZIP codes

TYD may ask for your address or ZIP code to provide you with region-specific updates — e.g. if there’s a special election happening in your area. TYD may mail you information.

Social media handles

If you’re not a TYD member or trying to become one, TYD will never ask you to provide your social media handles to use when signing up for updates from the website or any Google Forms. If you are a TYD member or trying to become one, TYD may ask you for your social media handles to connect with you via those platforms, including but not limited to Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook profiles.

If you are trying to charter a chapter or join a caucus, TYD may ask you for your social media handles to update chapter and caucus rosters.

TYD will never disclose your social media handles to anyone outside of TYD. Further, we will not follow you or share content from your social media handles unless requested or authorized.
